The long and SHORT of it

If I was to ask you what is the style staple and pretty much corner-stone to the majority of your holiday wardrobe, would you agree with me and say a pair of denim shorts?

Having just been away I realised how much I rely on my good old denim cut-offs.  I’d say they featured in my to day-to-day wardrobe on a daily basis, whether that was chucked on over a swimsuit (see below) or teamed with my favourite boho blouse, but on returning home they’re relegated to the back of the cupboard, where I only pull them out if it’s a scorcher in the garden.

I don’t know about you but I’m a cost per wear person (although others might tell you something else), so I’m feeling brave this summer and plan to maximise the life out of my denim shorts.  Here’s how with some inspo from the style set.

Looking at those outfits there isn’t anything new or ground breaking, but what you need to pull off a cut off when you’re not beach side is confidence, which means a little extra outfit planning.  A long sleeve, whether that’s a breton stripe top, simple tee and blazer or crisp white shirt looks super chic and balances out the amount of flesh you’re flashing.  If your main concern is people whispering ‘oh my god, look at her butt’ then a carefully tied shirt or jumper will give you a little more coverage up back and a lot more confidence up front.

If you’re looking for a denim short that’s more city break than beach holiday there are some 3/4 styles that are very now and much more likely to feature in your non-holiday wardrobe once your feet are firming back on home turf.

That my lovelies is the long and the short of it, so here are a few of my high street favs.

Arm candy fit for the Beach

With only a few days to go before we head off on hols I’m all last minute panic stations trying to ensure everyone has everything (and more) that they could possibly need.  I shop all year round (don’t tell the hubs) in prep for the holiday season.  The winter sales are my favourite time to nab a holiday bargain or two, but the one item I’m always useless at ensuring we have is a good size beach bag.

This year I’m on top of it and picked up this beauty from one of my favourite local stores, Friends Dress Agency who are just brimming with fabulous pre-loved items.  I bagged this beauty at a fraction of the price it would have been brand new and better still, it’s never been used!

So there’s my little bit of beach bag inspo, but take a look at these beach babes and their awesome arm candy, sure to have you dreaming of distant shores.

Whether you’re jet setting or world wide trekking there is a beach bag to suit every style of holiday.  Of course they’re practical, especially when you have kids and a husband who all want to stuff their days’ essentials in your bag, but you can also use it as your carry on if flying and it’s the coolest way to carry your day-to-day essentials when you swap you daily commute to the beach, for the return to the office.

So before it’s finally time for me to jet off I’ve lined up a bevy of beautiful beach bags just for you guys, I’m talking sequins, tassels, pom poms, flamingos, embroidery, wicker, canvas and more!

When the bags are this good you don’t even need a holiday to justify a little purchase.

Bohemian Babe

Just another manic Monday, actually it’s not and I’m quite liking it.  Apart from the fact I ended up puking all day Easter Sunday, which probably saved me thousands of calories from all the chocolate I planned on scoffing, the bank holiday weekend has been lovely, as have the two weeks of half term actually and I’m a little bit dreading the school run tomorrow.

Any who, you can see from the title we’re going all ‘boho babe’ today, influenced of course by the fact we’ve just been bombarded with Coachella spam (no I’m not hating – who am I kidding) and that I’m off on hols very shortly to my fav place in the world – the White Isle.

My style is fairly clean on a day to day basis, but come summer time I LOVE to release my mind and body into all things boho.  I love the carefree look and feel you get with bohemian styling and now more than ever it’s easy to take this from the beach to the bar, or if you’re not poolside, from day to night and every occasion in-between.  See how the street stylers and insta-fashionistas do it below.

Most of us probably have a kaftan lurking in our holiday wardrobe and that’s probably where it’s gets the most use, but you can see above how the style set are making the most of their kaftans and incorporating them into their everyday wardrobe.  Not only that, but they are teaming over the easiest outfit on earth, jeans and a plain tee….et volia, boho chic at it’s finest, taking you from beach to the beat of the streets.

As with any trend there is no need to go top to toe.  This season there are hundreds (and I mean hundreds) of peasant, boho style blouses, from high street to high end.  One in particular that has caught everyone’s eye is this awesome offering from Next  Available in red and blue it screams boho and is reminiscent of the Vita Kin blouse but without the £1000 (yes you are reading that correctly) price tag.

So whether this is a trend you do year after year or something you’ve been longing to try, this season is one of the best for beautiful boho vibes.  Here’s the my best of the rest from our fabulous high street and cyber space…..Peace out peeps.

Holiday Haul

September is the month I’ve been desperately waiting for as I’m off on holiday, well actually three of them – yes I’m very greedy.  Whilst I spent the summer lusting over everyone else’s breaks on Instagram, I’ve also been slowly gathering my key holiday items, some of them have of course already made an appearance but everything needs a little trial run doesn’t it?

I’ll be visiting France, Ibiza and St Lucia, they’re all very different trips so when I’m shopping for holiday I try to buy pieces that’ll work on any and every occasion, even into the colder months when the tan and the memories are fading (that bit is mainly for my husbands benefit). I don’t know anyone who doesn’t struggle with packing, regardless of weight allowances and bag sizes, so here’s what key for me and why, and how I’ll be getting the most out of them through the rest of the year.

First up, swimwear.  Two kids in and one c-section scar I think my bikini days are numbered, so for me finding the right one piece was huge.  I’ve tried on countless options, from Primark to Mara Hoffman, but I finally found the right balance between poolside glam and practical mum (if there is such a thing) at Boden.  Yes it’s a rip off of the high end Marysia style swimwear, but it’s a great fit, has a sexy low back but great support up front, so this one piece will take me from beach club to local pool.

Teamed with that are my faded black denim cut offs from J Brand, these just get better with every wash and are probably the center piece to any holiday wardrobe.

On to the LBD, I found this James Perse number in TK Maxx and it’s perfect for a number of occasions.  I’ll be wearing over swimwear, but you could glam it up with heels and copious amounts of jewels for a evening out whether that’s dinner or dancing.

And of course I need a hat to hide my Monica style frizz whenever I’m somewhere hot.  I love a classic style trilby which looks as stylish on a city break as it does beach-side.  Just remember to wear it or carry in your hand luggage as it’s great for hiding under after a long flight, and you’ll save it from the dreaded suitcase squash!!

Some of you may have seen both the next items on my Instgram, if not come follow me @notjustadress. I just bought these Balenciaga sandals on a recent trip to Bicester, they will be perfect whether I’m doing daytime casual in denim cut offs or a floor sweeping maxi, definitely earning their cost per wear.

The bag is Antik Batik and it was love at first sight.  This little bag is actually quite large and can be used as a clutch, but also has a long rope, over the shoulder strap so is extremely versatile.  I’ll be using night and day.

The cream lace number is a floor length cover up from Surf Gypsy and goes nicely over my swimsuit. The two little tops are from Topshop and Primark and just had that Isabel Marant vibe that I love. I’ll get use out of these later in the year with jeans and an over-sized blazer.  Finally my Dodo Bar Or shirt, which I searched high and low for and end up buying from a boutique called Ruesrq via Shoptiques in America, check them out.  I actually can’t wait to wear this with leather trousers in the winter.

There we have it, I’m sure I’ll be posting lots of OOTDs throughout each break so have  look out for my favourite pieces you see here, and hopefully I might inspire or give you ideas for the next time you’re having fun in the sun.

Cool as a Co-ord

You may or may not have noticed but fully coordinated outfits, or co-ords as they’re affectionately known, are having a bit of a moment and have been for some time now.

Take everything you’ve ever thought was wrong about fashion, so matching your prints and patterns, but in separate items, and throw that out the window.  If you want to look effortlessly cool throughout the summer this is the look to go with, and surprisingly it works for every and any situation, we’re talking beach chic, special occasion outfits, everyday girl about town and even workwear – take a peak below.

Looking at the inspo images you can see how easy it is to go from pretty and girly to sports luxe or office appropriate.  It’s also really simple, no nonsense dressing because the look and style is already put together for you in two simple items.  Don’t be shy though and add your own spin to an outfit if you’re comfortable doing so.  Maybe you could trying colour clashing a t-shirt or cami with a blazer and short or trouser co-ord, this will also brake up the print if you’re feeling it’s a little too heavy.

However you want to try this look the high street stores and online retailers are packed to the rafters with different options. So, before you hit the shops think about what items you already have in your wardrobe, as you may have pieces that will work well when teamed with the co-ord items separately – the outfit options could be endless!

Beachwear Essentials

Which way is the beach?  I don’t know but I hope I get there soon.  It’s that time of year when we all start to think about the warmer weather that a beach holiday offers us whether it’s a full on 2 week break with the family, or a fun filled weekend away with the girls.  And the most important thing to plan after you’ve booked your ‘hols’ is of course your beachwear wardrobe.

Long gone are the days of a plain vest and pair of shorts being chucked on to get you from breakfast to the sun lounger, now your outfit is more likely to consist of sandals, beach bag, kaftan, swimwear, jewellery, sunglasses and a hat…phew that’s a long list, especially if you’re off for 14 whole days of summer sun.

Of course it’s not all about posing around the pool, but if you look good, you’ll feel good and everyone has little anxieties around holiday season as to how they may look lying on a lounger in comparison to everyone else.  You also don’t have to be flashing a lot of flesh to feel sexy, and it certainly doesn’t matter when it comes to topping up that tan – have you seen how many straps the swimsuits and bikinis have nowadays?!

Take a look at some of the inspirational images below and you’ll see how easy it is to chose you best feature to flash.

Don’t let your holiday wardrobe stress you out, we all want something new to wear but I bet if you look back through what you bought last summer you’ve got some real gems already waiting to be worn again.  Then all you need to do is update with a few choice accessories, maybe a new cover-up or pair of sandals and before you know it you’ll be itching to get your body on that beach.

So with that in mind here’s a round up of some of my favourite summer suitcase purchases from swimwear to cover-ups, temporary tattoos, jewellery and beach clutches, plus much more.   I like to shop at big high street and online stores like Topshop, H&M and ASOS, but it’s also good to find independent stockists like Dancing Leopard and Beach Cafe where you can find new brands, along with all sorts of bits and pieces other people may not yet have spotted.

Arm Candy fit for the Beach

We’re not far from May now, which really marks the start of summer.  If like me you’re already dreaming of warmer climes, crystal clear seas and white sands you’ve probably also been shopping for ‘holiday essentials’ at any spare opportunity.

Bikinis, sandals, beach cover-ups, they’ve all been available on the high street and online for some time now, so the next item to tick off your capsule holiday wardrobe is the beach bag.

When I buy something I like to get maximum usage out of an item, something that I can use at home and away, so the perfect beach bag purchase this summer is the straw or raffia bag.  Now I know this is essentially not anything new, but with the likes of beautiful British brand, Rae Feather making straw beach baskets and even clutches the most desirable (not to mention instagrammed) bags on the summer scene, I can promise you will not be saving this bag purely for beach holiday purposes.

If you’ve not yet discovered Rae Feather you only need to look through your Instagram feed to see a whole host of fans.  Rae Feather believe that with simplicity comes longevity – music to my ears!  We all want those timeless pieces in our wardrobe that we look to use again and again, season after season.  They also offer a fantastic monogram service so you can really make your bag your own, with initials and even choosing a colour way for the stripe details….Their monogram clutch is high on my birthday wish list.

Just take a look below to see how you can take this piece of arm candy from bustling city to beautiful beach life.

So if you’ve got some room left in that suitcase of yours now is the time to hit the high street and bag yourself a little straw number.  It can also double as a great piece of hand luggage with plenty of room for storing your duty-free purchases…Happy Holidays.
