Summer Jacket Styles

I don’t know about you but this constant chop and change in the ‘summer’ weather throws me and my wardrobe into a sweaty spin.  Since having kids I seem to heat up faster than a heat seeking missile if I have too many layers on.   So, when the warmer weather finally arrives I love not having to wear a big jacket, but as we all know, you can’t trust the good old British weather, so having a little summer jacket you can throw on in a down poor is a must!

There are a few ways to wear a light weight jacket this season, here are my top four.

The Trophy Jacket – Big, bold, embroidered or embellished.  It’s nothing new, but they just seem to get better and better. Buy wisely and you’ll have a gorgeous little number that will see you through season after season.

The Denim Jacket – Denim is just keeps going from strength to strength.  A staple that you can layer up or down, keep clean and simple or use it to tap into more of the seasons’ big trends.

The Shaket –  Yep, you know, the hybrid of a jacket and shirt and what’s not to love about a little bit of khaki.  One of the easiest and chicest ways to wear a summer jacket with a subtle nod to military styling.

The Leather Biker – No jacket round up is complete without the leather biker.  If you normally keep yours to the confines of your winter wardrobe DON’T, or if you’re feeling brave, now is the time branch out into brights or pastel colours.

Looking at that gorgeous lot I think I’ll now be adding more than one to my summer wardrobe!  If you have a bit of cash to splash it’s definitely worth investing in a leather. I’m loving the lighter, brighter hues hitting the high street at the mo, but whatever your budget here are some of my favs from all four styles, just waiting to be swung over your shoulders.

Kimono Queen

If there is one item in my holiday wardrobe I hate packing away once the holiday is over it’s my beach kimono.  It’s only a cheap one from Boohoo , but it’s been a fantastic buy and now there is more than one way to wear this bit of beach attire when you’re not frolicking in the sand.

You may have spotted a handful of fashionistas wafting around the city streets in what looks very similar to (and is more than likely) a beach kimono.  Of course they’re not teaming it with their must-have one or two piece, no, you’re more likely to see it worn over jeans and tee….See below

The maxi kimono has long been a firm favourite on the summer festival scene, but if you’ve out grown that part of your life and still want to get more wear out of this lovely piece of fabric, now is most definitely the time to give this look a go.

Hopefully you already own a lovely beach cover up that will work well for this trend, but if you don’t, are off on hols shortly and fancy giving this trend a go here are a few of my favs.  I think it makes the perfect airport outfit over a little vest, with jeans and sandals…And if you stick your swimwear in your hand luggage at least you’ll have one beautiful thing to wear poolside if your suitcase take a completely different kind of holiday!

You’d Look Good in a Paperbag

How man times have you heard or said that saying?  Well this season it’s most definitely the case as the only way you need to be wearing the waist on your trouser, skirt or shorts is in a paper-bag style.

This is a fab way to wear the high waisted look without needing to hold your breath the whole time, it’s much more relaxed and even better, it’s extremely flattering.

There is a multitude of ways to wear, from the inspo images you’ll see smart, casual and everything in-between.  You could wear this in a maxi skirt as wedding guest, in a pencil skirt for work or in a pair of easy breezy shorts on holiday.  I have to say my favourite way to do the paper-bag waist ties in with the utility styling that we are seeing a lot of this summer, it’ cool, casual and comfy, but whack on a pair of heels to take you from day to night and allow you to eat, drink and be merry!

This is a look that the high end designers do so well, but armed with inspiration you can pick up some super sassy styles on our wonderful high street.  Here’s a selection of my favs.

Island Style.

Just as we’re all gearing up and wrapping up, in more ways than one, ready for Christmas, fashion land is enticing the industry with all things summery.  It’s a daydream and a nightmare, all mixed up in one weird, whirlwind couple of weeks.  Just as we’ve got to grips with our winter wardrobe you find yourself drooling over swimwear, flirty dresses, sandals and skimpy shorts – almost wishing away the most wonderful time of the year!

Last week I was lucky enough, thanks to the mother-in-law, to escape all things doting wife and muuummmm, and catch a glimpse at the gorgeous going-ons at River Island’s SS17 press event, of which I’m sharing with you a sneaky peak into what you may be able to buy on the high street next summer.

Of course River is always very trend driven but it’s also really wearable.  They nail festival fashion and as soon as I walk in to the showroom that’s what I see. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just cool casuals you’ll find in River next summer, if you’re on the hunt for something smarter, with a little sophistication you’ll also be able to nab yourself some stylish pieces for work and play, desk to dinner – all that stuff.

My advice though, if there is one item to add to your wardrobe next spring/summer it’s a denim jacket.  We all need a little something to throw over our shoulders once the sun goes down, but I’m not talking just any old denim jacket, we’re talking business up front and the biggest of parties on the back!  Take a look…..

Finally, accessories and there is an abundance for summer.  As you’d expect from River, the footwear is on point with everything from embellished espadrilles to over the knee lace up boots – every occasion covered.  What really impressed me was the selection of sunnies.  Of course we all love a pair of designer shades, but if you’re looking for something budget busting with oodles style, that’ll have people looking twice then set your sights (ahem, sorry) on River Island next season.

Bold and Beautiful Botanical Prints

When it comes to prints I have to say I’m more of a minimalist really, bold bright, block colour and of course a stripe with the odd hint of animal print, but there is a particular print that’s recently caught my eye and it’s the botanical print.

I’m loving the palm or banana leaf style print, on a crisp white background and then this bold splash of green, but there are lots of ways this look is achievable. Just take a look at the below catwalk and street style pics to see different ways you can work this look into your wardrobe.

Some of these looks are big and bold, like the Blake Lively jumpsuit, but look how a pair of printed city shorts, teamed with a fresh white shirt offers just a hint of this totally tropical vibe making it pretty easy to wear.

The most natural habitat to try this look is of course on holiday and there are lots of lovely printed kaftans out there that’ll achieve this look.  I just snapped up a beauty in the Monsoon sale, it’s listed below but I’ll post pics on Instagram once it’s popped through my postbox.  I’ll be teaming it with denim cut-offs and a plain bikini when I get to hit the beach, but also want to get maximum wear out of it and know how work well with skinny ripped jeans and a silky cami.

Whether you’re shopping online or on the high street you can find beautiful botanical prints on everything from footwear, scarves and bags to maxi dresses, camis and tailoring.  And I’ve attempted to make it easier for you by narrowing down my perfect picks that will help you achieve this look no matter the style, event or occasion.

They Call it Mellow Yellow

Yellow may not be the first colour you think of searching for when out shopping, but let’s be honest, it’s more likely to pop out and grab your attention rather than requiring you to hunt it down.  And if you’ve been out and about on the high street over the last couple of weeks you’ll probably have noticed more and more of this vibrant shade peeping through the rails of clothing and shelves of shoes.

We were lucky enough to be treated to some gorgeous sunshine last weekend, granted we’ve returned to rain, but if you want to keep that warm sunny glow about your person yellow is the way to go.

I talk a lot of about key colours, or the colours of the season and am a firm believer in the fact that you can wear whatever you colour you like.  Never think something is off limits just because of skin or hair tone, all that’s needed is to make sure you’re wearing the right shade.  Yellow has a fantastic spectrum with everything from muted mustard, pale pastels and high-vis neons.

I like to wear yellow as a block colour on my bottom half, I just bagged myself a pair of the bright yellow wide leg cropped trousers from Zara (I’ve listed them below), then you can team it with anything on your top half – prints, stripes, lace or more block colours.  Try it as a zingy alternative to your usual jeans or black bottoms and I think you’ll be surprised at how well it works. If you’re not feeling brave enough to go full force just yet, you can add a hint with mouth watering accessories whether that’s shoes, bags, hats or jewellery.

Go on, create your own sunshine till that little yellow ball of fun returns to our skies.

Arm Candy fit for the Beach

We’re not far from May now, which really marks the start of summer.  If like me you’re already dreaming of warmer climes, crystal clear seas and white sands you’ve probably also been shopping for ‘holiday essentials’ at any spare opportunity.

Bikinis, sandals, beach cover-ups, they’ve all been available on the high street and online for some time now, so the next item to tick off your capsule holiday wardrobe is the beach bag.

When I buy something I like to get maximum usage out of an item, something that I can use at home and away, so the perfect beach bag purchase this summer is the straw or raffia bag.  Now I know this is essentially not anything new, but with the likes of beautiful British brand, Rae Feather making straw beach baskets and even clutches the most desirable (not to mention instagrammed) bags on the summer scene, I can promise you will not be saving this bag purely for beach holiday purposes.

If you’ve not yet discovered Rae Feather you only need to look through your Instagram feed to see a whole host of fans.  Rae Feather believe that with simplicity comes longevity – music to my ears!  We all want those timeless pieces in our wardrobe that we look to use again and again, season after season.  They also offer a fantastic monogram service so you can really make your bag your own, with initials and even choosing a colour way for the stripe details….Their monogram clutch is high on my birthday wish list.

Just take a look below to see how you can take this piece of arm candy from bustling city to beautiful beach life.

So if you’ve got some room left in that suitcase of yours now is the time to hit the high street and bag yourself a little straw number.  It can also double as a great piece of hand luggage with plenty of room for storing your duty-free purchases…Happy Holidays.
