Island Style.

Just as we’re all gearing up and wrapping up, in more ways than one, ready for Christmas, fashion land is enticing the industry with all things summery.  It’s a daydream and a nightmare, all mixed up in one weird, whirlwind couple of weeks.  Just as we’ve got to grips with our winter wardrobe you find yourself drooling over swimwear, flirty dresses, sandals and skimpy shorts – almost wishing away the most wonderful time of the year!

Last week I was lucky enough, thanks to the mother-in-law, to escape all things doting wife and muuummmm, and catch a glimpse at the gorgeous going-ons at River Island’s SS17 press event, of which I’m sharing with you a sneaky peak into what you may be able to buy on the high street next summer.

Of course River is always very trend driven but it’s also really wearable.  They nail festival fashion and as soon as I walk in to the showroom that’s what I see. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just cool casuals you’ll find in River next summer, if you’re on the hunt for something smarter, with a little sophistication you’ll also be able to nab yourself some stylish pieces for work and play, desk to dinner – all that stuff.

My advice though, if there is one item to add to your wardrobe next spring/summer it’s a denim jacket.  We all need a little something to throw over our shoulders once the sun goes down, but I’m not talking just any old denim jacket, we’re talking business up front and the biggest of parties on the back!  Take a look…..

Finally, accessories and there is an abundance for summer.  As you’d expect from River, the footwear is on point with everything from embellished espadrilles to over the knee lace up boots – every occasion covered.  What really impressed me was the selection of sunnies.  Of course we all love a pair of designer shades, but if you’re looking for something budget busting with oodles style, that’ll have people looking twice then set your sights (ahem, sorry) on River Island next season.

Green With Envy

Green! A colour you may or may not be keen on, but if it has just a hint of khaki it suddenly becomes much easier, and cooler, to wear.

Obviously today’s post has been inspired by my recent  River Island purchase, come over to Instagram @notjustadress and see my fab khaki skinny jeans, but I also have a pair of cargo style pants from Zara that I love and find easy to dress up or down depending on occasion and of course the British weather.  This style of  utilitarian trouser is always what springs to mind when khaki and pant are mentioned in the same sentence, but just take a look at the below to see the variations on a khaki pant.

Maybe you’ve never attempted a khaki trouser for fear of it looking to casual, but the above show how easy it is to smarten up this look by teaming with a heel and a blazer….easy peasy right?!  Or why not play with textures and choose a fabric like velvet in a murky green?  Not an obvious choice but surprisingly stylish and so on trend for this autumn.

Khaki also gives you a nod to this seasons’ military trend without being overtly obvious in a piece of clothing that will be worn as part of your wardrobe regardless of season.

Go on, give green a go.

Get Your Thrills in Frills

I’m not the girliest of girls, I’d always chose trousers and jeans over a skirt, grey and black over pink and definitely don’t do frills – technically. Right now one of the hottest looks that filtered down from the catwalks and into the high street is ruffles and frills, but not as we know it, I mean you wouldn’t imagine a clean, minimal look could also feature huge ruffles sleeves or frill bottom trousers, but it can and it looks so good!

If you like your fashion with healthy does of feminine flair then this is a look not to be missed.  You’ll find your frills and ruffles on just about every item of clothing this season, we’re not just talking pretty dresses, blouses and knitwear, but jackets, shoes and bags – the whole shebang!

Now volume on clothing can add volume to your shape, but worn in the right places, in the right fabrics it can actually enhance rather than hinder, but beware of the placement if you don’t want to double the size of your boobs, belly or bum.

There is so much to chose from on our fabulous high street and it’s worth bearing in mind that some of the big designers have sent ruffles and frills down the SS17 catwalks, so buy now and you’ll still be flirting with your frills next spring.

Don’t Sweat It.

How much do I love a sweatshirt, oh let me count the ways.  Once kept to the confines of your workout wardrobe, the simple sweatshirt has now reached phenomenal fashionista status thanks to the likes of Markus Lupfer, Alexander Wang and Kenzo, all of who made sports luxe styling easy for everyday wearing no matter the occasion.

Now that there’s a chill in the air a jumper is highly likely to become part of our everyday uniform, but have you thought about how such a simple piece could change up your look when teamed something other than jeans?  I’m talking pleated and sequin skirts or layered over a maxi dress. How about teamed with leather trousers and heels or under dungarees and with your favourite white trainers?

Ok, so some of those looks are extreme, Courtney K and her over the knee boots for example, but it hopefully shows the variety of looks you can achieve out of such an easy to wear piece.

Luckily for us the high street is also a little sweet on the sweatshirt and have some awesome offerings that won’t have you sweating at the cash desk. If you’re lucky you might even bag yourself a H&MxKenzo jumper from their latest collaboration, but it’s more than likely that they’ll all be on ebay now at over inflated prices.

Take a peak below at the rest of the best.

Coat Edit.

Coat, jacket, outerwear, whatever you call it this is one of the most important purchases of the autumn winter season.  You may be looking to invest in something that’ll last you years, or just looking for a cheap and cheerful piece that’ll cover off the seasons biggest trends, either way it’s an important buy.

I find that to get the best buys you need to start coat shopping as soon as the autumn season stock hits the high street, but as the weather has started getting colder much later in the autumn months people want to shop for coats when it’s cold.  The retailers have realised this and there is as much chance of nabbing a good coat now as there was at the beginning of the season….hurrah!

So, what’s hot and what’s not?  To be honest there is a huge selection of styles this season, covering every trend and taste out there.  If you want key looks then there’s military, shearling, leopard, velvet, faux fur, embroidered details or a parka….phew!

These styles can be costly, but choose wisely and you could end up with a purchase that’s bang on trend for now and will also last you into the coming years.  If you prefer something a bit more classic focus on the cut and colour, so navy, black, grey or camel, with a cut that is flattering to your shape and will work with every outfit option in your wardrobe.

With all that said here are a few of my favourites out there right now.

Holiday Haul

September is the month I’ve been desperately waiting for as I’m off on holiday, well actually three of them – yes I’m very greedy.  Whilst I spent the summer lusting over everyone else’s breaks on Instagram, I’ve also been slowly gathering my key holiday items, some of them have of course already made an appearance but everything needs a little trial run doesn’t it?

I’ll be visiting France, Ibiza and St Lucia, they’re all very different trips so when I’m shopping for holiday I try to buy pieces that’ll work on any and every occasion, even into the colder months when the tan and the memories are fading (that bit is mainly for my husbands benefit). I don’t know anyone who doesn’t struggle with packing, regardless of weight allowances and bag sizes, so here’s what key for me and why, and how I’ll be getting the most out of them through the rest of the year.

First up, swimwear.  Two kids in and one c-section scar I think my bikini days are numbered, so for me finding the right one piece was huge.  I’ve tried on countless options, from Primark to Mara Hoffman, but I finally found the right balance between poolside glam and practical mum (if there is such a thing) at Boden.  Yes it’s a rip off of the high end Marysia style swimwear, but it’s a great fit, has a sexy low back but great support up front, so this one piece will take me from beach club to local pool.

Teamed with that are my faded black denim cut offs from J Brand, these just get better with every wash and are probably the center piece to any holiday wardrobe.

On to the LBD, I found this James Perse number in TK Maxx and it’s perfect for a number of occasions.  I’ll be wearing over swimwear, but you could glam it up with heels and copious amounts of jewels for a evening out whether that’s dinner or dancing.

And of course I need a hat to hide my Monica style frizz whenever I’m somewhere hot.  I love a classic style trilby which looks as stylish on a city break as it does beach-side.  Just remember to wear it or carry in your hand luggage as it’s great for hiding under after a long flight, and you’ll save it from the dreaded suitcase squash!!

Some of you may have seen both the next items on my Instgram, if not come follow me @notjustadress. I just bought these Balenciaga sandals on a recent trip to Bicester, they will be perfect whether I’m doing daytime casual in denim cut offs or a floor sweeping maxi, definitely earning their cost per wear.

The bag is Antik Batik and it was love at first sight.  This little bag is actually quite large and can be used as a clutch, but also has a long rope, over the shoulder strap so is extremely versatile.  I’ll be using night and day.

The cream lace number is a floor length cover up from Surf Gypsy and goes nicely over my swimsuit. The two little tops are from Topshop and Primark and just had that Isabel Marant vibe that I love. I’ll get use out of these later in the year with jeans and an over-sized blazer.  Finally my Dodo Bar Or shirt, which I searched high and low for and end up buying from a boutique called Ruesrq via Shoptiques in America, check them out.  I actually can’t wait to wear this with leather trousers in the winter.

There we have it, I’m sure I’ll be posting lots of OOTDs throughout each break so have  look out for my favourite pieces you see here, and hopefully I might inspire or give you ideas for the next time you’re having fun in the sun.

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

It’s the start of another week and a new season, have you noticed all the leaves on the ground?  I can’t believe how quickly it changes and summer fades.

Last week in Friday’s post I blogged about one of the big autumn trends, velvet. The first of this weeks’ posts is another key look for autumn, and a firm favorite of mine – metallic.

A little like velvet, metallics used to be kept for those special sparkly occasions, but over the last few seasons it’s slowly become more acceptable, if you’re brave enough, to wear the shiny stuff in your every day wardrobe.  We’re in for a treat this season though, you’ll see all shades of metallics that’ll remind you of those huge tubs of sweets you buy at Christmas, (and eat before it’s any where near Dec 25th) from your standard  bronze, silver and golds to dusty pink, glorious greens and midnight blues.

Hopefully the above pics will give you inspiration and show how easily a little bit of twinkle can update outfits you already wear everyday. Team a beautiful metallic pleat skirt with chunky knitwear and white trainers for daytime cool, then chuck on a pair of heels for evening glam.

My favourite way to do metallics is with denim, I do live in jeans, but try pair of metallic silver courts with ripped, skinny jeans, it’s just mwah!  Or how about a big slouchy, silver sequin jumper with light blue jeans, fab teamed with the last of that summer sun-kissed skin and so effortlessly cool.

Have a look at some of the magic metallics our high street has to offer, these are definitely buy now wear all season pieces, and as the temperature really drops just layer up and continue to shine.
